12 subjects were selected from an original cohort of 23 students. They were selected in the first year of an honours degree course in Modern Languages on the basis of scoring in the range 17/50 – 25/50 on a pre–study cloze (gap filling) test.
Age range at the beginning of the study was 19 – 23. There were 8 females and 4 males.
All subjects had had 7-8 years of predominantly classroom exposure to French
at the beginning of the study and were classed notionally as ‘intermediate-level’
learners.
